Training for???

A coworker stopped by my desk today and pointed at the Indo Board sitting beside me.

“What are you training for?”

The question caught me completely off guard.

Years ago, I would have had an answer ready. An XTERRA race. A cycling event. A fitness goal. Some future version of myself I was trying to become.

But in an instant , the answer came out:

“Joy.”

I’m training for joy.

Not a race.
Not a competition.
Not a finish line.

Just the ability to feel good in my own body.

The truth is, I use the Indo Board during calls, between meetings, and whenever I need a quick movement snack. Recently I’ve started spending lunch breaks in our workplace gym. Not to crush a workout, but to move.

A little resistance training.
A little mobility.
A little yoga.
Some breathing.
Maybe a few minutes on the inversion table.

Nothing impressive.

And that’s exactly the point.

Somewhere along the way, we decided movement only counts if it’s happening in the “right” place, wearing the “right” clothes, pursuing the “right” goals.

A gym.
A studio.
A race.
A competition.

But movement is bigger than fitness.

Movement is regulation.
Movement is energy.
Movement is focus.
Movement is longevity.
Movement is connection.

Most importantly, movement is part of being human.

You don’t need to be training for a marathon, a triathlon, or a race.

You can be training for a better afternoon.
A calmer mind.
Stronger hips.
Better balance.
More energy.
More presence.

You can be training for your own human best.

Maybe it’s time we make movement a little less weird and a lot more normal.

At work.
At home.
In the living room.
In the office.
Wherever life happens.

Because sometimes the best answer to “What are you training for?” is simply:

Joy.
