I wasn’t trying to get a workout in, that is never really the inention…
Kerry and I had already walked through the neighborhood wearing weighted vests, talking and catching up as we moved. It was good movement. The right movement.
But when I got home and fed the dogs, I had this feeling that I wasn’t quite finished.
That’s the best way I know how to describe it. I wanted to round out the movement.
Not check another fitness box. Not burn more calories. Not close a loop.
I was trying to balance out my morning before stepping into my day.
And for some reason, the electric longboard was calling me.
I stepped onto the board and the word arrived almost immediately:
Grounded.
That’s what I was looking for.
Of all the things I could have ridden that morning, my body had apparently chosen the one that required me to plant my feet, soften my knees, find my balance and feel every contour of the road beneath me.
A few minutes later I floated past a driveway and found myself about five feet from a deer. It didn’t run. It just looked at me while I slowly rolled past.
For a few seconds there was nothing to accomplish. No destination. No workout. No productivity.
Just the board underneath my feet, the morning around me, and this deer looking back at me.
Present. Connected. Grounded.
Mindful movement isn’t about finding the perfect exercise.
It all starts by getting quiet enough to notice what you’re actually asking for.
How do I feel?
How do I want to feel?
What kind of movement might help me get there?
And then… Move!
Notice what happens.
This morning, the answer happened to have four orange wheels.
